Camellia japonica 'Chandleri'. Originated in 1819 by the Vauxhall nursery of Chandler & Son through a cross between 'Variegata' (brought from China in 1792) and 'Anemoniflora' (brought from China in 1806). First offered for sale in 1825 at five ponds and five shilings, the equivalent of half a year's wages for a maidservant.
