130315_023_Camellia japonica 'Elegans'.jpg
Camellia japonica 'Elegans'. Originated in 1823 by the Vauxhall nursery of Chandler & Son as a seedling of 'Anemoniflora' (brought from China in 1806). Two other camellia varieties originated later were given the same name. As a result, this variety has often been called 'Elegans' (Chandleri), creating confusion with the variety 'Chandleri'. 'Elegans' has been given many synonyms, among them 'Mr Chandler's Elegant Camellia'. (From catalogue, Camellias in the Conservatory Festival 2011, Chiswick House and Gardens).
