Camellia japonica 'Rubra Plena'. Brought from China in 1794 for Sir Robert Preston of Woodford, Essex, the principal owner of a number of East India Company ships. It is one of the oldest varieties to reach the western world. Its nomenclature has a long history of confusion. Among the many synonyms are 'Old Red', 'Greville's Red', 'Queen of Denmark', 'Rubra Maxima', 'Newington', and 'Madame Lavis'.
