Apple 'Calville Blanc d'Hiver', mid September. A very old dual-purpose, culinary-dessert apple believed to originate from France or Germany. It dates back to 1598 when Jean Bauhin named it 'Belle de Zurich', and it was grown first at Calleville in the Department of Eure, Normandy and in the 19th and early 20th centuries in orchards around Paris. Thomas Jefferson also grew it at Monticello, Virginia. It has over 150 different synonyms.
