Camellia japonica 'Pompone'. Brought from China to Kew in about 1810 and also known by the name of 'Kew Blush'. Can have flowers that are red or variegated, as well as white and white tinged with rose. It also tends to "sport" - i.e., to produce branches with different coloured flowers to the rest of the plant. (From catalogue, Camellias in the Conservatory Festival 2011, Chiswick House and Gardens).
