Cones and foliage of Patagonian cypress or alerce (Fitzroya cupressoides syn. F. patagonica), mid March. From southern Chile and southern Argentina. The oldest known tree is over 3600 years old. The name Fitzroya was given in honour of Captain Robert Fitz-Roy who captained the Beagle on which Charles Darwin travelled around the world.
