Camellia japonica 'Aitonia'. A variety raised from the seed of 'Pompone' in 1819 by Chandler & Son of Vauxhall. Named for William Townsend Aiton who, like his father, Wiliam Aiton, was head gardener at Kew. It was first offered for sale in 1825 at three pounds three shillings, a substantial sum.
