Climbing French bean 'Cherokee Trail of Tears', early August. This variety derives its name from its dramatic history. In 1838, the Cherokee nation was displaced by settlers and set off on an infamous march that became known as the Trail of Tears. They were only able to take their most precious possessions with them, one of which was this bean. The young pods can be eaten raw or cooked, and they freeze perfectly. When dried the small black beans are delicious in winter stews." (Heritage Seed Library)
